CBI files chargesheet in Kamaxi Forex case

PANAJI: Of 11 cases, the central bureau of investigation (CBI), this week, filed a chargesheet in six individual cases in the Kamaxi Forex Private Limited alleged scam. The main case, in which around 900 people were duped to the tune of Rs 55 crore is likely to be chargesheeted within four months, a CBI source said.
The chargesheet has been filed before the judicial magistrate first class court, Margao, against the company owner Nilesh Raikar, his wife, Nilima, and mother, Rekha. CBI sources said that the accused have been charged for cheating and various other sections of the IPC.

A CBI source said that chargesheets in six cases were filed in the last one week and all cases were filed by an individual. In February this year, the CBI had registered a first information report (FIR) upon a high court directive into the Kamaxi Forex Private Ltd case. The central probe agency had been asked by the high court to file a status report after every four months.

Earlier, the high court had directed the economic offences cell (EOC) of Goa police to register separate FIRs of the complainants. So far, the cell has filed 11 FIRs, including one on behalf of the state.
EOC had arrested Kamaxi Forex's owner, Nilesh, his wife Nilima, 35, and mother, Rekha, 65, in the case. Subsequently, all the accused were released on conditional bail. Initially, an FIR was filed against Raikar and directors of Kamaxi Forex on April 15, 2016.
The scam came to light in February 2016 when cheques issued by the firm to its customers could not be honoured. When approached, Raikar allegedly told the customers that he is going through a financial crisis and he would pay them next month.
After a few days, customers found the Kamaxi office closed and the owner missing. The complainants alleged the company convinced them to make deposits with it on the alleged false assurance of hefty returns. The Margao-based company that started in 2004 dealt with foreign currency exchange.
