THREE knife wielding robbers allegedly attacked a Beitbridge based forex dealer and stole $3 350 before dumping him in a bush.
The suspects allegedly lied to the forex dealer that they wanted to conduct their deal in a car and after driving for some time they pounced on him and robbed him of the cash before dumping him.
Matabeleland South acting provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident which occurred on Tuesday.
She said three suspects Sindiso Moyo (29), Gerald Labison (29) and Enault Ndebele (26) all from Insiza District have since been arrested.
“I can confirm that we recorded a robbery incident in Beitbridge at Engen Garage on Tuesday around 2PM. In this incident, a Beitbridge cash dealer was approached by Sindiso Moyo who wanted to exchange R30 000 for $4 000. Moyo connived with two other men and stole $3 350 and a cell phone from the cash dealer at knife point,” she said.
Ass Insp Mangena said the robbers left the cash dealer stranded about 100 metres from Lutumba tollgate and he reported the matter to police manning the tollage. She said the robbers were intercepted by police manning a roadblock in Bubi area resulting in their arrest and recovery of the stolen money.
A source said the forex dealer, Mr Liberty Masuku was attending to Moyo, one of the suspects, when a vehicle stopped close to them under the pretext of looking for passengers.
He said Moyo offered the driver $20 so they could do their cash transaction inside the vehicle. The source said the driver drove off and picked up the second suspect along the way leading to the robbery.
Meanwhile, Ass Insp Mangena said a couple was robbed when the man stopped the car following a tyre puncture.
“The second incident occurred on Wednesday at around 1AM at a railway crossing along Beitbridge- Masvingo Road. Itayi Taderera from Harare was travelling along that road with his wife in a Toyota Corolla when their vehicle had a tyre puncture about 100 metres from a railway crossing.
“While Mr Taderera was changing the tyre he was approached by two unidentified men who hurled stones at him and demanded money. They stole $1 200 and R500 cash, two cell phones and clothes valued at $1 970 and fled,” she said.
Ass Insp Mangena appealed to members of the public who may have information on the whereabouts of the two unidentified men to approach any nearest police station.
She urged members of the public to report cases early.
“We urge people to report cases early so that police can act swiftly and make arrests. We also urge people to be on the look out for criminals especailly at night along highways such as the Masvingo- Beitbridge road,” she said. — @DubeMatutu
