Why has Ireland spawned so many of the big names in the global payments business?
As chief executive of one of these names, Fintrax Group, Patrick Waldron should know. However, he’s at a loss to identify a common thread linking his company with other homegrown successes such as Stripe, Fexco, Realex and Monex. “Whether it’s our natural charm or whatever, Ireland’s brand is very high abroad in terms of payments,” he says. “We tend to have a good knack in this space.”
Fintrax cemented its global credentials just before Christmas with the €219m purchase of Planet Payment, a Nasdaq-quoted company specialising in multi-currency processing.
Waldron is currently doing a round of meet-and-greets with his new colleagues, paying his first visit to Planet Payment’s Dublin operation…
