UNAMUSED by Prime Minister Najib Razak’s New Year message, into which his father was dragged to attack the opposition, Lim Guan Eng reiterated a call for Putrajaya should set up inquiries into the 1Malaysia Development Bhd and Felda scandals.
Najib had said in his message that the government had held a royal commission of inquiry (RCI) into the Bank Negara Malaysia forex scandal of the 1990s in answer to calls for it from opposition politicians like DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang, who is Guan Eng’s father.
Guan Eng, who is DAP secretary-general, said he was responding to Najib because Kit Siang was currently recovering from recent surgery to remove a malignant tumour in a kidney.
“I want to rebut Najib’s statement on behalf of my father. The statement cannot go un-rebutted. I am surprised he dragged Kit Siang into this.
“Kit Siang suggested the RCI in the 1990s. Why did Najib call for an RCI into a scandal that happened in the 1990s, and none for current ones like 1MDB and Felda?
“These are ‘hotter’ scandals. Kit Siang has also called for RCIs into them. Do we have to wait another 20 years for an RCI?” he told a press conference in Penang today.
BNM lost RM31.5 billion from 1992 to 1994 as a result of forex trading.
The RCI implicated former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is now Pakatan Harapan chairman; former finance minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is de facto PH leader; and former second finance minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop, who was the bank adviser overseeing matters, including the central bank’s foreign reserves and internal financial market regulation, at the time.
Guan Eng, who is Penang Chief Minister, said it was a disappointment that the Bank Negara RCI was held as a “political witch hunt to settle political scores”, instead of to seek the truth or to recover the lost money.
He called it “nonsense, unethical and immoral”, as well as politically motivated.
“It is just a political game leading up to the coming general election,” he said.
Guan Eng, who is also Bagan MP, said in a parliament modelled after the Westminster system, all cabinet members, including Najib, were liable for the Bank Negara scandal.
“All of the cabinet should bear the collective responsibility. You might have objected, but once the matter was decided, you were equally responsible unless you had resigned,” he said.
Meanwhile, Guan Eng said Kit Siang was doing well and the doctors were happy with his progress. – January 1, 2018.
